Sally
and I went hiking at Point Mugu State Park on April 14, 2001. Last week Ron
took us up to see a field of wildflowers near the park that he had discovered
on a recent bicycle trip. It was a great day for hiking, the weather was cool,
but not cold and many flowers were in bloom. Towards the end of our hike I looked
up the trail about 100 feet and spotted a coyote walking towards us on the trail.
I stopped and pointed him out to Sally, but she was in front of me so I couldn't
get a pictures, by the time I got my camera out he had moved off the trail.
It was really beautiful that day, large sections of the park were covered with
yellow poppies and everywhere there were purple, white, yellow and orange flowers.
Sally
and I went hiking on February 9, 2002 at Point Mugu. This time we took the boney
mountain trail which heads up the Santa Monica mountains. We weren't on the
trail very long before I spotted a coyote in the field off to our left. This
time I was able to get my camera out in time to snap some pictures of her before
she headed out of view (I really have no idea whether it was a female or male
coyote). Seeing the coyote was a great start to the trip. It was a very windy
day, but other than that it was very pleasant. The hike was mostly up hill and
we walked for quite a distance. I have a rule that once we finish half our water
supply it is time to turn around. We got pretty close to the top of the mountain
and we were hoping that we could get high enough to see the ocean, but we didn't
make it that far. The next time we will have to start earlier and bring more
water.
