Costa Del Sol

These are previews of the pictures that I took on our recent trip to the South of Spain. We stayed on the coast of the Mediterranean. These are pictures that I took with my digital camera. I took a number of pictures with my 35mm SLR which are in the process of being developed. Once those pictures are developed I will redo this entire page.

Torremolinos

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment in Torremolinos. We spent all of Tuesday and Thursday on the beach at Torremolinos. On Tuesday we were so tired from our trip to Sevilla to do anything else and on Thursday they entire country went on strike so we couldn't go anywhere. Despite what the guide books said Torremolinos was actually quite since. The temperature was perfect and the beach was great. The water was a little bit too cold to swim in, but overall we had a wonderful time.

Sevilla

We went to Sevilla on Monday. It was about a 2 and a half hour train ride to Sevilla. We visited the Cathedral at Sevilla which is the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. We also we to La Giralda, the Plaza de Espana, the Maria Luisa Park and the Casa de Pilatos. When the Cathedral of Sevilla was started in 1401 the designers were quoted as saying "Let us build a cathedral so immese taht we will be taken for madmen". The Cathedral is very large and could fit several Notre Dames inside it. The Bell Tower of the Cathedral is called La Giralda after the 16th centure weathervane on the top. After visiting the Cathedral Sally and I had our worst meal of the vacation at a restaurant located near the Cathedral. Later we went to the Real Alcazar which, unfortunately, was closed on Monday so we only saw the outside. We then took a bus to the Parque de Maria Luisa. From the park Sally and I walked to the Plaza de Espana. Suprisingly, the Plaza de Espana is a fairly new building which was built in 1929. Sally and I attempted to take the bus to Casa de Pilatos, but after getting on the bus headed the wrong way we decided that we didn't have much time left and decided to take a cab, which was a good decision because the Casa is on a small windy street that we would have had a difficult time finding. Construction for the Casa began at the end of the 15C and it is supposed to be a replica of Pontius Pilate's house (although there doesn't seem to be any historical basis for that)

Granada

On Wednesday we rented a car and drove to Granada to see the Alhambra and Generalife. The Calat Alhambra (Red Castle) is one of the finest Moorish palaces still standing. The walls to the Alhambra where started in the late 13C. The Generalife gardens were begun in the early 14C and the Nasrid palaces where built during the mid to late 14C. The Alhambra consists of a number of buildings. The Alcazaba is the fortress part of the castle with towers and defensive walls. The Alcazaba was originally build in the 8C and 9C but was later rebuilt. The Nasrid Palaces are the center of the fortress and stunning in beauty. The Generalife is the gardens of the Alhambra and is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen

Malaga

On Friday we took a short train ride to Malaga. We visited a number of churches in the area (4 where build in the 3 years between 1487 and 1490) and also saw the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro. The first church we visited was the Cathedral of Malaga, we next went to the Iglesia Santo Cristo, then to the Iglesia de los Martires. We then headed for the Alcazaba with the Teatro Romano and then took the long steep walk up to the Castillo Gibralfaro.
