U.S. Virgin Islands June 2005

Getting There

The day that we left for the Virgin Islands was trash day. There wasn't much room to put the trash out and one of the trash cans was right next to Randy's car. I could see the trash truck coming and I wanted move the cans away from the car so I rushed to move one of the cans that had already been picked up into the driveway. As I was
rushing I tripped on the curve and stubbed my toe. It hurt, and by the time we got to LAX I was limping, but there wasn't much I could do about it. When we finally got to the condo I got a chance to look at my foot and saw that it was black and purple. Well, at least I hadn't planned a week of walking. My foot didn't bother me too much swimming but walking on it was something of a challenge. By the time we got back home my foot stopped being black and blue and didn't hurt so much. Lately, I've gotten used to having cuts and bruises take longer to heal so I thought that this was just another disadvantage of getting older. After the second week home my foot still hurt and I decided that if it still hurt at the end of the week I would see my doctor. The next week I went to the doctor and he X-rayed my foot. When he looked at the X-ray he said to me, "Hey, look at this". Even I could see the fracture in the X-ray. They put a cast on my foot which I wore for 3 week. My foot still hurts a little when it gets damp.

The Condo

When we arrived at the condo there was no one at the front office. That wasn't a good sign. Fortunately, there was a sign on the office with a telephone number and we had a cell phone. We called the number and the person who answered told us that someone would meet us in about 15 minutes. This was not an auspicious beginning, but once we saw the interior of the condo, we realized we'd been wrong; the condo was fantastic. The condo had 3 bedrooms. The one Randy chose to stay in had a private bath. Sally and I chose the one with the largest bed and a balcony. Our room didn't have a private bath, but there was a full sized bath right next to the room. The 3rd bedroom was a loft with a half bath and sitting area. I think that the designer of the condo did a good job. I suspect that the condos are rented by groups of people. Since none of the rooms are obviously better than another other room it allows people to chose the features that they like the best. The condo also had a living room, a kitchen and a laundry room. The maids came every other day.

Around the Condo - The Anchorage

The condo complex had its own pool, tennis court and beach. The beach wasn't great compared to the rest of the beaches on the island, but the Caribbean has some of the best beaches in the world so our private beach was better than a typical beach in southern California. There was also a decent restaurant at the yatch club which was within walking distance.

St. John

All of the guide books said that St. John's was beautiful so we took the 20 minute ferry over to the island. The snorkeling was fantastic. We had a great time. If my foot was better we probably would have done some hiking on the island. On the other hand, the beach was so beautiful that we had no problem spending the entire day there. If you go to St. Thomas you should definitely take a trip to St. John.

Coral World

Sally really wanted to go to Coral World, which is an aquarium on St. Thomas. The aquarium was a lot better than I thought it would be. Afterwards we went snorkeling at the beach near Coral World. When I rented the mask and fins I also got 4 dog biscuits. The person said that the fish really liked them. Randy and I went out into the water and I broke up one of the biscuits. So many fish were attracted by the biscuit that Randy actually became a bit nervous.
