Work
Xylan/Alcatel
I've been working at Xylan and Alcatel for about 3 1/2 years. Alcatel
is located in Calabasas off the 101. Most of my programming career
has been spent in the South bay area, Santa Monica or further south.
One of the worst parts of working for Sun or Locus was the terrible commute
every morning down the 405. When I worked at Interactive, Andy Swart
wanted to work in the valley and got Interactive to open an office in Calabasas.
I worked there for about a year along with Darryl Richman, Brian Makens,
Doug Leavitt and Carl Switzski. When Sun bought Interactive I had
to move back down to Culver City.
When I started at Xylan I worked in a building that was next to the
building that I had worked in while at Interactive and later we were moved
into the same building that Interactive occupied. I really like working
in Calabasas. The commute is not bad and the area is very nice.
There is a sheep ranch at the Las Virgenese exit which I really like.
Every time I pass it I feel as if I'm out in the country somewhere.
There is another ranch with cows and up the street a ranch with horses.
Occasionally I can look out my window and see deer on the hills.
The Calabasas skies are always filled with hawks and in the spring the
hills are green and we can often spot rabbits while out for a walk.
